The Boston Red Sox are likely close to making their final roster decisions with a little more than a week to go before the start of the 2025 season. The biggest question for the Massachusetts team is who will be their second baseman on Opening Day for Alex Cora.
MLB Pipeline’s No. 7 prospect, Kristian Campbell, has been making a great impression during Spring Training, despite hitting just .158 with a .500 OPS. It seems likely that he will make the roster for Opening Day, according to MassLive.com. That will set up a lineup with Alex Bregman at third base, Rafael Devers as the DH, and Campbell at second base.
“The roster, we have a lot of good players but we cannot just throw 26 guys and hope for the best», Cora said to MassLive on Tuesday during a game against the New York Yankees. «It has to be a functional roster. That’s my job as a manager, to piece that together».
Cora needs to figure out some things before the final out of 2025 Spring Training. He needs to decide who will be his closer, his second baseman, what will happen with Devers, and who will start the first game against the Baltimore Orioles after the Texas Rangers series.
“It all depends on where we go», manager Alex Cora said. ”We don’t know yet how we’re going to do it. The No. 4, No. 5 (starters) and who’s going to close, who’s going to be the setup man, all that stuff».
At least one question has been answered: Triston Casas will be the first baseman on his own. There will be no platoon at first.
“He will play. He’s going to play against lefties and righties,» said Cora to MLB.com. «We’re not going to platoon at first base.»

Carlos Narváez seems to be the favorite for the Red Sox backup catcher role behind Connor Wong. “Good catcher, good defender, great dude,” Alex Cora told MassLive. “He was part of our Rookie Development Program.” The Venezuelan catcher was acquired in a trade from the New York Yankees back in December.
