Carlos Narváez is virtually set to win the Red Sox’s backup catcher job, at least for Opening Day. Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported on Thursday that the team has demoted Blake Sabol to minor league camp.
The Venezuelan-born catcher was acquired from the Yankees in December in exchange for Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and future considerations. He made his MLB debut last year but seems to have made a strong impression during Spring Training.
“Good catcher, good defender, great dude. He was part of our Rookie Development Program”, Cora said on Tuesday to MassLive.com. “He wasn’t afraid of speaking to the group. New organization, new group of guys and he felt very comfortable. Defensively, he’s good. Offensively, he had a great season in Venezuela».
Carlos Narváez played six games with the New York Yankees in MLB last year, collecting three hits in 13 at-bats. The 26-years old also appeared in 96 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he slashed .254/.370/.412 with 20 doubles, 11 home runs, and 58 RBIs.
“He walked me through his process, as far as the hitter, the last few years», said Cora to MassLive. «He went from being on top of the ball to hitting a lot of fly balls to striking out a lot to getting back on plane. What everybody’s going through in the industry. He understands what he needs to do.
With Narváez on board, the biggest questions for Alex Cora to answer are who will be his No. 4 and 5 starters and who will win the second base job.
