Lucas Giolito has been waiting a long time to make his debut with the Boston Red Sox. He’s recovering from Tommy John surgery and is finally making progress toward pitching in the MLB after almost two years.
Giolito pitched on Wednesday for the second time since October 2023. He threw 3.1 innings for Triple-A Worcester, striking out three, allowing one run, and issuing three walks. He threw 64 pitches and is scheduled to pitch two more games next week.
«I think he was ok, but he is somewhat of a perfectionist,» said WooSox manager Chad Tracy to El Emergente on Thursday. «He expects a lot of himself. He’s really been working a lot on his slider. He was able to dial it in, and he used it quite a bit. So I’d say, for him, he’d probably like to pitch and navigate the zone a little bit better.«
The WooSox will be on the road next week, traveling to Rochester. The team is analyzing whether he will pitch twice in that series or if he’ll join another team’s affiliate.
Lucas Giolito, who signed a two-year, $37 million contract with the Red Sox in 2024, wasn’t at Polar Park on Thursday.
“He’s healthy. He feels good,” said manager Chad Tracy. “He’s going to have a couple more rehab stints as he continues to increase his pitch count.”
