Michael Fulmer is back in Chicago. The former Rookie of the Year was called up by the Boston Red Sox and rejoined the big-league team in the same city where he last pitched in the majors back in 2023.
Alex Cora’s team promoted the former first-round pick just a few days after his most recent outing with Triple-A Worcester. They needed a new arm after Richard Fitts was placed on the injured list with a right pectoral strain. Fitts is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.
«It’s been long, it’s been really long», said Fulmer to NESN after he joined the Red Sox on Sunday. «I have been there. I have done it. Like I said, it’s a little more satisfying knowing that you didn’t have a job guaranteed after a long year of rehab. Just kind of inspires you to put that much work in with my wife and both my kids».
Michael Fulmer underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2023. He signed a two-year contract with the Red Sox a few months later.
The right-hander pitched on Thursday and allowed two runs over four innings. He had 18 strikeouts in 11.2 innings across three games in Worcester before being called up on Sunday to take Richard Fitts’ place on the roster.
«He has been very competitive,» said WooSox manager Chad Tracy to El Emergente on Thursday. «[Fulmer] got ahead in some counts and then had to throw a couple of pitches that were really way off—kind of no-decision pitches—but I thought he did a great job.»

In other news, Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks pitched another solid inning in Worcester on Sunday as scheduled. He struck out one and walked one. Yasmani Grandal has also joined the Triple-A team as he begins working his way back to the big leagues.
