There was an error that slipped through during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first home series of the year. A fan noticed it on X, and it quickly became a big story. The front office had removed a Roberto Clemente sign in right field at PNC Park and replaced it with an ad.
The story went viral, gaining over 4 million views on X in just 24 hours. Roberto Clemente’s family immediately reacted. After all, the late outfielder is one of the greatest legends in Pirates history—and the most iconic Latin American player in MLB history.
«While we appreciate that the Pirates acknowledged their failure to inform us», said Roberto Clemente Jr. on a statement. «It reveals a broader issue: a lack of meaningful collaboration between the organization and on matters that are deeply personal and historically significant to us and the fans».
Pirates’ haven’t made any official comment yet about the incident. The ad that replaced the Roberto Clemente sign is for the Surface brand, and its placement in right field—where Clemente famously played—sparked immediate backlash.
«The outpouring of support from fans in Pittsburgh and across the country has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated», said Clemente Jr. in his statement. «It is clear that our father’s legacy continues to inspire and unite people, not only for his achievements on the field, but for the integrity and compassion he demonstrated off of it».
Fans and members of the Clemente family expressed disappointment over what they saw as a lack of respect for one of the franchise’s most iconic figures. The situation continues to generate strong reactions on social media, with many calling for the team to restore the tribute.

«We have always been open to building a sincere and lasting partnership with the Pirates, one grounded in respect and shared values», said Clemente Jr. in his statement. «Our hope is that this moment serves as an opportunity for reflection, paving the way for a more thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative relationship moving forward. I intend to reach out to the Pirates directly to explore this further.»
