Lucas Giolito exceeded everyone’s expectations in his return to the big leagues after more than a year recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The Boston Red Sox probably suffered their most brutal loss of the year against the Toronto Blue Jays, who walked them off in the 10th inning with an RBI single by Alejandro Kirk with the bases loaded, ruining a great comeback by Giolito.
«I thought I pitched well until the sixth [inning],» Lucas Giolito told NESN after Wednesday night’s 7–6 loss. «In the sixth inning, I made some crucial mistakes. I had been throwing the changeup pretty well into the corners, but I just left them up in the zone.»
Giolito ended up allowing three runs on two home runs and two walks, while striking out seven. He threw 90 pitches. His changeup was nasty, and he topped out at 96 MPH with his fastball. He also retired 11 hitters in a row from the fourth through the sixth inning.
«If Gio throws the ball like that,» said Cora after Wednesday’s game, «We’re going to be in good shape all season. He did an outstanding job.»
Giolito walked George Springer with two outs in the sixth. Then Daulton Varsho and Alejandro Kirk went back-to-back. In the next inning, Anthony Santander tied the game with a three-run shot.
