Everybody is talking about Carlos Narváez and the job he’s doing as a catcher for the Boston Red Sox. The Sox coaching staff has been praising him, and the Boston Herald even dedicated an article to his performance. Now, he’s firmly in the mix for playing time behind the plate.
We’ll talk more about the Venezuelan-born catcher soon. But a fair question arises: with Connor Wong expected to return to the big-league team sooner rather than later—what happens then?
«We’re going to do the same thing we did earlier in the season,» said manager Alex Cora to reporters before Wednesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners and after he shared some news about his catchers. «We’re going to play both.»
Connor Wong took his first live BP on Wednesday, just a couple of weeks after breaking his pinky finger during an interference play earlier in April. He also caught a bullpen session from Tanner Houck.
Manager Alex Cora added that Wong will begin a rehab assignment starting on Sunday. However, he will be sharing catching duties with Carlos Narváez.
«He’s feeling good,» said Cora. «Most likely, we’re going to put him on a rehab assignment on Sunday. How many [games]? We’re not sure yet. We need to talk to him, talk to the hitting group, see how he feels. He should be fine. It’s just about the hitting—see what he needs and make a decision.»

Carlos Narváez has been catching nearly every game for the Boston Red Sox since Connor Wong suffered a hand injury. The Venezuelan-born player had a day off on Wednesday—his third since April 7 and his second in the past four days.
