It was different this time. The Boston Red Sox, who had appeared in just one playoff game over the past six seasons, finally gave Fenway Park a reason to roar again—winning their first home opener since 2020.
This time, the atmosphere was electric as fans packed the stadium to support a team carrying high expectations for both this season and the future. It was a promising start in a ballpark where the Red Sox had lost 123 of their last 243 home games. The team finished below .500 at home in each of the past two years.
“That’s a different first inning than the last few home openers,” said manager Alex Cora to MLB.com after the 13-9 win against the St. Louis Cardinals. “It was the other way around the last few years, and for us to score five, I was thinking about it … that feels a lot better.”
After a quiet offensive start in Texas, the Red Sox lineup came alive in the 13-9 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Trevor Story and Wilyer Abreu both launched home runs in the first inning, setting the tone early. Abreu, in particular, continued his strong start with three hits in the home opener.
“Obviously, the energy was in the ballpark,” Alex Bregman said to MLB.com. “It’s a lot of fun to be out there playing, and especially after a long road trip, not being here for a while. And then coming back and feeling that energy, it brought all of us into the game really nicely and we’re looking forward to continuing it.”
Before this victory, the Red Sox had lost five of their last six home openers, but everything seemed to click this time—starting the season at Fenway with a bang.

“Early and late. I think we have that type of offense, those three guys [at the top] — [Jarren] Duran, [Rafael] Devers, Bregman — any day we can score quick. And then when [Triston] Casas and Trevor and the rest of them are swinging the bat the way they are, we become very dangerous,” said Alex Cora to MLB.com. “Love the fact that we didn’t stop. We needed every run at the end.”
