Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks was at Fenway Park on Friday night. He’s nearing the end of a long journey, having survived cancer and undergone Tommy John surgery in 2023.
The Australian-born pitcher will become the first player from his country to play for the Boston Red Sox. Manager Alex Cora said he expects Hendriks to be activated over the weekend, during what will be a busy stretch for the front office as they figure out how to make room for Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Connor Wong.
«Let’s see where we are after [Friday’s] game and all that,» said manager Alex Cora on Friday, after the team designated Michael Fulmer for assignment to open up a roster spot for Hunter Dobbins. «We will decide what we’re going to do with our rotation.»
The Red Sox announced Friday afternoon that they designated Michael Fulmer for assignment in order to activate Hunter Dobbins. They also optioned Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester to activate Alex Bregman, who was on paternity leave.
«Let’s see what happens in the next 24 hours», said Cora about Fulmer. «Hopefully, he stay with us».
It’s very likely that Liam Hendriks will take Dobbins’ roster spot after Friday’s game. He pitched in two Triple-A games and one Double-A game to complete his rehab assignment, after receiving an injection in his elbow due to discomfort during Spring Training.
