Roman Anthony left Friday’s game in Triple-A Worcester after injuring himself during his first at-bat. The top baseball prospect fouled a ball off the top of his right foot. He continued playing but felt some soreness and was removed from the game after making three plate appearances.
It’s still unclear whether he’ll need further testing to determine the severity of the injury.
“I think he’s OK,” said manager Chad Tracy to reporters after the WooSox’s loss to the Syracuse Mets. “Obviously, they’re going to check him out. He fouled that ball off the top of his foot and kept going. He was just tightening up, and we made the decision to take him out as a precaution.”
Despite the scare, Roman Anthony kept up his hot streak at the plate. He extended his on-base streak to 16 games, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a single. He also found himself at the center of a bizarre play.
In the bottom of the third inning, Anthony was on first base and advanced to second after Vaughn Grissom drew a walk. He then moved to third on a sacrifice fly. The Syracuse Mets’ pitcher attempted to appeal that Anthony had left second base early, but made a throwing error when trying to toss the ball to the second baseman.
“He’ll be OK,” Tracy added. “But obviously, they’ll need to take a look at him.”

Chad Tracy also said he wasn’t yet sure whether Anthony would need X-rays. “I don’t know yet,” he said on Friday night, when the prospect played center field for the third time this year. “I’ve got to talk to the trainers and see what they want to do.”
