Roman Anthony is giving the Boston Red Sox a tough decision. The Massachusetts team needs help in their lineup, and the top baseball prospect seems ready to provide it.
The million-dollar question is how Alex Cora could carve out a path to bring the 20-year-old outfielder to the big leagues. Red Sox outfield is crowded, Anthony is in a crucial stage of his development, and the front office needs to clear around four roster spots for other call-ups.
«I don’t think that we want to waste anything. We want to make sure that when Roman comes to the big leagues he is able to step in and be successful», told general manager Craig Breslow to WEEI on Thursday. «[We want] that there is a clear opportunity for him to get the runway that he will need as a 20-year old».
The Boston Red Sox had a day off on Thursday. However, Roman Anthony was still a hot topic on social media. He continues to rake in Triple-A Worcester, where he hit two home runs—including a grand slam—scored three runs, drove in five, and walked once in a doubleheader against Rochester.
But Craig Breslow doesn’t seem ready to make the call just yet. The team needs him, but the reality is they will need to open four roster spots in the coming days. MassLive.com reported that Hunter Dobbins will be recalled to start Friday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Liam Hendriks are also expected to return next week.
“I think there are still some development opportunities,” Breslow told WEEI. “But we’re really excited about what Roman has done thus far.”
