Sean Newcomb earned another chance in the Boston Red Sox rotation with his last outing against the Tampa Bay Rays.
It appears likely that the left-hander will pitch against the Seattle Mariners during the second series of the Red Sox’s second homestand of the season, manager Alex Cora announced on Saturday, according to MassLive.com.
Cora is also expecting to bring back Brayan Bello after he recovered from right shoulder inflammation. The Dominican-born pitcher made four rehab appearances over the past few weeks between Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland. The expectation is that Bello will return on Tuesday.
Sean Newcomb pitched very well at George Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday. He has yet to complete a five-inning outing, but he came very close against the Rays. He didn’t allow any runs and struck out four in his previous start.
The Red Sox haven’t announced their rotation for next week. They’ll go with Tanner Houck on Sunday and Walker Buehler on Monday. After that, they’ll use Brayan Bello and Newcomb, though the order has not yet been determined.
Bello was at Fenway Park on Saturday afternoon and is just waiting to be activated
