A year ago, Trevor Story suffered an unfortunate injury on the field. It was a major blow to the Red Sox’s season, but one year later, the veteran infielder finally seems on track to have a great year.
Story was attempting to field a ball at shortstop in early April 2024 when he sustained a shoulder injury that required surgery and nearly ended his season. But that’s in the past now.
«When he’s healthy, he’s a 30-30 player,” manager Alex Cora told reporters after the Red Sox’s 10–2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Friday. “We haven’t seen the healthy version of Trevor Story. My job is to keep them on the field. I do my best. Last year, obviously, it was an accident.”
The 32-year-old shortstop had his first multi-homer game since May 2022, driving in six of the team’s 10 runs on Friday. He’s already hitting .321 with a strong .876 OPS and six home runs.
“He’s such a good athlete», Cora added. «That we’ve taken away the thought process now. Yeah he has a plan going in, but we give him the license to swing. And sometimes it doesn’t look good metrics wise, right? And people [are] critical about it, but I’m not. I want him to be an athlete, be in a position to attack and execute. He’s been doing that.”
Story played just 69 games over the last two seasons and 163 games in his three years with the Red Sox prior to 2025. He signed a six-year, $140 million contract with Boston in 2022.
