The Boston Red Sox will wrap up their third home stand of the season on Thursday against the Texas Rangers. They’ll then begin a road trip with a weekend series against the Kansas City Royals, followed by games against the Detroit Tigers — where they expect to activate Walker Buehler.
The right-hander was placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to April 29. Buehler explained a few days ago that the issue was simply bursitis.
“Buehler played catch today,” said manager Alex Cora to the reporters on Wednesday, before the second game of the series against the Rangers. “He’ll throw a bullpen [on Thursday]. He’s aiming for the last game in Detroit or earlier in the next homestand.”
Walker Buehler last pitched on April 26, but it doesn’t sound like he will need a rehab assignment in the minors before being activated.
Alex Cora also provided an update on Richard Fitts.
“He threw a bullpen on Monday,” Cora said. “He’ll throw another one on Thursday. He’s feeling a lot better. At first, we were a bit concerned, but now we feel very comfortable with where he’s at.”
The manager did not yet know when Fitts will begin his rehab assignment.

Richard Fitts was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 13 with a mild right pectoral strain. He does not have a return date yet, but updates are likely to come after his second bullpen session, which is scheduled for May 8.
