What else do Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony need to do to make the Red Sox big league team? Maybe that’s the question a lot of people are asking right now.
The outfielder is hitting .322/.450/.520 with six homers, eight doubles, 18 RBIs, and 33 runs as of Wednesday. His infielder teammate already has eight homers, 28 runs, and is slashing .262/.332/.451. He started his third straight game at second base on Wednesday, which could pave the way for him to reach the big leagues.
«That’s a great question,» said manager Alex Cora when a reporter asked about promoting their top prospects. «We are where we are. Right now, we have some guys here who are playing great baseball. I believe that, at some point, they will be part of this team.»
The Boston Red Sox may have already found a path to bring Marcelo Mayer up to the MLB. It’s not a short-term solution, but it could provide a clear route.
Rookie Kristian Campbell has been working on transitioning to first base. On Tuesday, Cora said the infielder is about 2.5 or 3 on a scale of 10 in terms of learning the position.
“I do believe they are going to be part of this,” Cora added, referring to Anthony and Mayer. “But as of right now, we haven’t made that decision.”
If Campbell successfully moves to first base, it could mean Marcelo Mayer will soon become the Red Sox’s second baseman.

Marcelo Mayer has played only 8 games at second base in his baseball career, all of which were this year. His natural position is shortstop, which means he still needs to learn and develop at second base to be ready for the major league level.
