The Boston Red Sox need a new first baseman. They have already found a short-term solution, but now they need to figure out how they will proceed following Triston Casas‘ injury. The first baseman is out for the season with a left knee patellar tendon rupture, the team announced on Saturday.
Now what? There are many ideas circulating—ranging from moving Rafael Devers to first base to bringing in a player from outside the organization. One thing that’s not expected: neither Marcelo Mayer nor Roman Anthony is likely to move to first base in the short term.
«In the short term, we brought [Abraham] Toro up,» said general manager Craig Breslow on Saturday before the second game against the Minnesota Twins. «The conversations about long-term solutions are ongoing. We’ll figure something out. We have no choice.»
It seems that there is a difference in vision between the Front Office and the Field Manager regarding Rafael Devers. Breslow has not ruled out the idea of moving the Dominican-born player to first base.
«All options are on the table,» said the general manager to NESN. «Asking guys who haven’t played in the big leagues yet to assume a new position while trying to make that transition is a difficult ask. We need to be open-minded about solutions here.»
But the idea of moving Devers is something that Alex Cora is not convinced about.

«It just happened yesterday,» Cora told MassLive.com regarding the idea of moving Rafael Devers to first base. «We’ll talk and see where we’re at. But I think Romy and Toro can do the job. I truly believe that, so we’re going to roll with them.»
