Jordan Hicks has joined the Boston Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester, where he threw his first live batting practice on Thursday.
The right-hander was one of four players acquired by Alex Cora’s team in the blockbuster deal for Rafael Devers on Sunday. Hicks is recovering from right toe inflammation he suffered earlier this month.
«When he was in San Francisco, that was one of the next steps in his progression,» said WooSox manager Chad Tracy on Thursday. «That was more of a ‘let’s keep him on plan’ with what he was already intending to do. Beyond what just happened today, I have absolutely no idea.»
Tracy told the media he believes Hicks threw some bullpen sessions and faced hitters while he was still in San Francisco. The pitcher left Polar Park after completing his scheduled live BP and was not available to the media.
“From there, that’s up to [Craig] Breslow and Alex [Cora] to decide what they’re going to do,” Tracy added. “We’ll follow orders if anything else needs to happen on our end. But this was the easy avenue—they’re on the West Coast, so get them here. We have hitters who can face them, and we have catchers who can catch him. He was intense.”
Breslow told the media earlier this week that he expects Jordan Hicks to contribute in the late innings once he joins the big-league team.

Chad Tracy described Jordan Hicks’ live BP as intense. “He was locked in,” the WooSox manager told the media on Thursday. “He’s taking it very seriously. He was throwing hard. So from here, I just wait and see what they plan to do with him.”
