Jordan Hicks has joined the Boston Red Sox big league club for the first time since he was included in the package the team received in exchange for Rafael Devers.
The righty, who is recovering from toe inflammation, took over the former Red Sox DH’s locker in his new clubhouse and will wear number 46. Hicks is expected to be activated next week during the upcoming series against the Cincinnati Reds.
«He feels great,» said manager Alex Cora before the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. «He feels like the outing was a good one. The velo was good, but mechanics were better. See how he feels today throughout the day, and there is a good chance he will be active during the Reds series.»
In the beginning, Jordan Hicks will join the Red Sox bullpen alongside Justin Wilson, Garrett Whitlock, Aroldis Chapman, and Greg Weissert.
«I am really excited to play for this historic organization,» said Hicks on Sunday. «And that I get to be a part of a young squad.»
Jordan Hicks signed a 4-year, 44-million-dollar contract with the San Francisco Giants a year ago. The Boston Red Sox also tried to sign him when he was a free agent but were beaten by the Giants.
The pitcher made a couple of appearances in Triple-A Worcester, where he pitched 1.2 innings, allowed two runs, struck out two, and walked two.

Masataka Yoshida will be in Worcester on Tuesday. He will serve as the designated hitter on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then play in the field on Thursday, manager Alex Cora announced on Sunday. «We will meet again to go over what he needs in terms of at-bats and what we need from him physically,» said Cora. «We’ll decide what to do after that.»
