Who will be the Boston Red Sox third baseman in 2026?
Ten months ago there was a lot of hype in Fort Myers right after the team’s front office signed Alex Bregman to a 3-year, 120 million dollars contract. He got an opt-out after each season of that deal. That also brought the same question for the 2025 season as they had to figure out what would happen with Rafael Devers.
«Let’s grade him 8 out of 10,» said Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo to El Emergente. «He had a great six weeks. He missed a big chunk due to injury and he was average the rest of the way, which was 2 and a half months. I give that season 6 out of 10 and he still opted out.»
Both Devers and Bregman are gone for now, as the Dominican-born player was traded to the San Francisco Giants earlier this year.
The expectation is the Red Sox will sign a star hitter in the next few days or weeks as the Winter Meetings are officially underway. Most reports link the team to Pete Alonso, Kyle Schwarber and Bregman.
“I don’t think they have the money to do both at 30 millions», Cotillo added. «They are at 225. That gets them to 285 and you still have relievers to add. Even if you trade (Jarren) Duran for something that’s only 7 or 8 million. Not 20. The guys that they pay the most are (Garrett) Crochet, (Trevor) Story and (Sonny) Gray and those guys are not going anywhere.”
Alex Bregman ended up the 2025 season playing 114 games, slashing .273/.360/.462, with 18 homers, 62 RBIs, and 64 runs scored.
