Willson Contreras is the new Boston Red Sox first baseman, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Venezuelan-born hitter was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, along with $8 million, for three Red Sox pitchers, including Hunter Dobbins, who was the biggest name acquired by Oli Marmol’s team.
The Boston Red Sox were looking for a big bat, and Willson Contreras could provide some of the power they were seeking. He recorded 20 homers in 2025 with the Cardinals while slashing .257/.344/.447 in 135 games. He also drove in 80 runs. The infielder will receive $1 million after waiving his no-trade clause.
The Red Sox will also send pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita to complete the trade.
This is the tenth trade that the Boston Red Sox have made during this off-season, most of them to acquire pitching. The Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray trades are the biggest ones this winter.
The trade is still pending official confirmation.
