Willson Contreras will be the Boston Red Sox’s first baseman in 2026, Craig Breslow confirmed on Monday night.
The Venezuelan-born infielder, and former catcher, was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals along with $8 million for three Red Sox pitchers: Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo, and Blake Aita, which leads to the question: What will happen with Triston Casas?
«It’s not a secret that Triston has tremendous potential, but also hasn’t been able to stay on the field,» said chief baseball officer Craig Breslow on Monday. «Over the last couple of years, thanks to two really unfortunate but significant injuries. I had a chance to talk to him this morning, and what I told him is exactly what I am going to share with you, which is we still have a lot of confidence and believe in Triston.»
Triston Casas has only played 92 games in the past two seasons due to several injuries.
It was expected that he would have a breakout season in 2025, but he broke his knee earlier in May and suffered a season-ending injury.
«What he needs to do is commit to do everything possible to get back on the field,» Breslow added. «He is doing that right now and it feels really good with the progress and there is going to be an opportunity for him to impact games for us.»
Casas has been training in Fort Myers during the winter to get ready for Spring Training.
«He understood that this is an opportunity for the organization to take a step forward,» Breslow added.
