It seems that everybody is expecting the Boston Red Sox to bring Alex Bregman back after he opted out of his three-year, $120 million contract a few weeks ago.
The team’s players spent the entire Fenway Fest campaigning for the return of the veteran infielder. However, the team’s management didn’t want to get ahead of what is going to happen. “The ball is on his court,” said manager Alex Cora on Saturday.
“At this point we remain engaged and we are going to everything we can to improve our roster,” said chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. “My job is to be very mindful balancing improvement in the short term with the impact in the long term. If there is an opportunity to continue to invest in this team via free agency that’s a path we are going to prefer.”
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract back in February 2025, but he had an opt-out after every year of the deal. He played 114 games and slashed .273/.360/.462, with 28 doubles, 18 homers, and 62 RBIs.
“We saw the impact that Alex had last year on the field, in the clubhouse, and in the community,” Breslow added. “He is someone that fits our team pretty well. He is still out there, which means we have a chance to sign him.”
During Fan Fest, rookie pitcher Connelly Early said that Alex Bregman invited him to work out with him in Arizona, and Roman Anthony admitted that “he was a huge part of his success.”
“I would love to have him back,” Anthony said. “I love Breggy.”

«He was like another hitting coach for me,» said Roman Anthony about Bregman on Saturday. «He is sitting next to me every second of the game, just constantly showing me different things and helping me to prepare. So I can’t speak enough about him.»
