When the Boston Red Sox traded for first baseman Willson Contreras later in December, Triston Casas wasn’t surprised.
Craig Breslow immediately called Casas to let him know that he “still believes in” him, as the first baseman recalled the call during Saturday’s Fan Fest at Fenway.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Casas said on Saturday. “The first baseman position for this team has, you know, lacked over the last couple of years the production from that spot. And as of right now, the way it sits, he is a better player than me and has been for his entire career. Hopefully, I can come back to the player that I was a couple of years ago and know I can be, and contribute to the team in whatever fashion, at whatever position they see fit for me.”
Triston Casas has played only 92 games in the past two years.
The first baseman broke his knee during a play in early May 2025 that resulted in a season-ending injury. He has been rehabbing in Fort Myers during the off-season, and he has already been cleared for full baseball activities.
“It’s been a tough year, especially with how well the team did,” he added. “I really wanted to be a part of it. Playing in the playoffs is a goal of ours every single Spring Training. That’s what, you know, Alex Cora sets the precedent for — winning a championship — so seeing our guys come close to doing it and not being a part of it, yeah, it bothers me.”
Casas is still unsure if he will be ready for Opening Day, but he doesn’t expect to miss too much time if he is not.

“He looks really good,” said Alex Cora about Triston Casas. “I watched some videos of his past week in Fort Myers. One thing about Triston is that he is the same hitter that we envisioned a few years ago. Nothing has changed. He just got hurt. A lot of people get hurt and they bounce back. We just have to wait.”
