Who will play third base for the Boston Red Sox next season?
That may be the biggest question right now after Alex Cora’s team officially introduced Ranger Suárez on Wednesday. The lefty signed a five-year, $130 million deal, which is the biggest contract given by Craig Breslow in free agency since he took office in 2023.
“The way that our roster is currently constructed, so many of our infielders have versatility, that it gives us additional flexibility, right?,” said Breslow on Wednesday. “You look at whether it’s Marcelo, Romy, Hamilton, SoGard. All those guys are capable of moving around. And so we should take advantage of that, and just, you know, find the the player, the players that can most improve our team, and then, you know, we’ll be able to fill in the pieces.”
During the offseason, the Red Sox have already made more than 10 trades. Even on Wednesday, they traded infielder Tristan Gray to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for catcher Nate Báez in order to open a spot for Suárez on the 40-man roster.
“It’s been a very busy off-season,» team president Sam Kennedy added. W»e have more work to do.»
Besides Suárez, the Red Sox have also added pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras.

«There was a strong interest in Ranger independent of other decisions and other outcomes,» said Craig Breslow at a press conference on Wednesday. “The most important thing we did as an organization and baseball operations is there we understand that there multiple paths to improve the team”.
