The Boston Red Sox had four of their players either winning the Gold Glove or winning it, but at the same time they led the majors in errors.
Alex Cora will try to keep his infield the same as much as he can, looking for consistency. Marcelo Mayer wasn’t in the Opening Day lineup at the beginning. Isiah Kiner-Falefa was the second baseman against the Cincinnati Reds, but the Red Sox manager has an idea of how he will try to keep things together.
«I am trying to avoid Marcelo (Mayer),» said Cora before Thursday’s game. «He can play short too. We are gonna try to stay at consistent as possible. Trevor at short, Caleb at third, Marcelo at second most of the time and Willson at first. Hopefully defense will be more consistent that way.»
The Red Sox also led the American League in errors in 2021 and 2023, and the majors in 2024 and 2025.
«We have to be better defensively», Cora said on Thursday. «Throughout camp we were solid. Whoever thinks that I go home and I am happy because we led the league in errors, It’s freaking wrong.»
«I hate errors,» said Alex Cora. «I played 13 years in the big leagues because I was able to play defense. As a manager to lead the league in errors kills me.»
The plan for the Red Sox will be to play both Andruw Monasterio and Kiner-Falefa at short when Story has a day off.

Alex Cora said on Thursday that his plan is for both Connor Wong and Masataka Yoshida to play on Sunday in the series finale in Cincinnati. Wong will also be catching on Tuesday in Brayan Bello’s 2026 debut. That doesn’t mean that Carlos Narváez will get more catching time when Bello is on the mound.
