Marcelo Mayer has broken camp and will be the Boston Red Sox’s second baseman to start the season, Alex Cora announced on Saturday. “He did an amazing job,” Cora said. The Red Sox manager added that he was impressed with the progress Mayer made last October to prepare for the playoffs.
“I worked hard, and I’m really happy. I’m excited to help the team win,” Mayer said after learning the news.
Garrett Crochet allowed six runs in his final Spring Training start before Opening Day in Cincinnati next week. “It’s part of the buildup,” the ace said after the game. “We like to see the results.”
Kristian Campbell was reassigned to minor league camp before Saturday’s game, as Chris Cotillo reported. “You’ve got to play better,” said manager Alex Cora. “There are a few things he did in camp. Obviously, he didn’t walk as often and he struck out a lot. That’s not him. We just have to keep working together.”
Willson Contreras was removed from Saturday’s game after feeling under the weather.
Wilyer Abreu played his first game with the Red Sox since the World Baseball Classic.
