Johan Oviedo is waiting for Dr. Keith Meister’s call to see when he needs to travel to Texas in order to check his most recent MRI.
The Boston Red Sox pitcher started feeling some pain in his right elbow two days after his season debut in Houston. He was feeling good after his performance against the Astros, and the next day he played catch normally. Then he woke up the following morning with some soreness in his arm.
«I am waiting on a positive, uh, incident for the doctor,» said Oviedo after Friday’s game. «Still don’t know the results. It’s all speculation so, which, is, you know, being positive about the results. The only thing we were watching, that was the velo going down.»
Manager Alex Cora told the media that in Dunedin, Oviedo was throwing 98 or 99 MPH, but after that he was showing a decrease in his velocity.
«Other than that, it’s zero signs of soreness or pain,» Oviedo added. «That’s why we keep competing and keep working.»
The pitcher was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday, and Zack Kelly was called up to take his place on the roster.
«I had a Tommy John surgery in 2024,» Johan Oviedo said. «Hopefully this is not the case. I mean, I had a great offseason, you know, and last year was perfect after I came back physically. So this is like the first surprise because I had a really good offseason.»

«We don’t have any idea, you know, what happened,» said Oviedo after being asked if adding a new pitch could have an impact. «Because it was never a sign of soreness or pain. The only sign we had during the Spring Training and my start in Houston was the decrease on the heater.»
