The Red Sox have lost seven of their first 9 games. They haven’t had a winning streak yet during the 2026 season, and they will be looking to win their first series of the year against the Milwaukee Brewers to start the third week of the season.
For a moment, it seemed that Alex Cora’s team was on the verge of building something special. Ranger Suárez pitched well in the first three innings in his first outing at Fenway Park. The team showed good defense. Suárez himself made a couple of plays, but then everything collapsed in the fourth inning.
“I can’t allow that because that to happen because the team goes down,» said Suárez. «We need to switch the chip. We need to turn the page and start doing what we are capable to do. I left a few pitches in the strike zone and they took advantage of it. I didn’t want that to happen.”
In the third inning, the San Diego Padres scored three runs following a Fernando Tatis Jr. double and a couple of hits by Jackson Merrill, Manny Machado, and Nick Castellanos.
Machado went deep in the next inning with a man on board to give his team the lead. The Red Sox were able to tie the game again in the seventh inning, but Merrill also hit a homer in the eighth to win the game for his team.
“We simply just need to be better,» said Roman Anthony after the game. «It’s just a tough stretch, and we need to find a way to just bring more energy and just be better. This is unacceptable. It’s unacceptable to the fans. It’s unacceptable to the standard that we set for ourselves.»
Cora was asked if he will make some lineup adjustments to find more production.
“You cannot overreact for this series,” the manager said. “You gotta play better. That’s the bottom line.”
